How to Practise Speaking English at Home for Free

Many students say: “I understand English but I can’t speak.” The only way to improve speaking is to practise. You can do a lot at home for free.

1. Talk to yourself. Describe what you are doing: “I am making tea. Now I am washing the cup.” It feels strange at first, but it works.

2. Record your voice. Use your phone. Read a short text or answer a question. Listen and try again. You will hear your progress.

3. Shadowing: Play a short video or audio. Repeat immediately after the speaker, copying the sound and rhythm.

4. Use free apps and YouTube. Search for “English speaking practice for beginners”. Speak with the video.

5. Change your phone language. Put your phone in English. You will see and use English every day.

6. Speak with family. Agree on 10 minutes of English time at home. Even simple sentences help.

7. Join free online conversation groups. Look for free ESOL conversation classes on Zoom or local community centres.

8. Think in English. When you walk or cook, try to think simple sentences in English instead of your first language.

Consistency is more important than perfection. Ten minutes every day is better than one long session once a week.
